Kitchens Shrinking as Apartment Living Appeal Grows

What used to be the very heart of the family home is now being down-sized and given less importance as the demand for apartment living increases.

The average size of people's kitchens in New Zealand, particularly in Auckland, have reduced partly due to the crippling cost of buying a home. More people are opting for less expensive apartment living that also provides the great convenience of being closer to work. This has led to the development of more apartment blocks in the city and consequently the arrival of mini kitchens, as developers prioritize living space and bathrooms over kitchen size.

The demands of certain industries means that many of today's working class in Auckland are working beyond 5pm and for those that don't have families, it's a lot easier to head out for a late bite to eat before making the short stroll back to their inner city apartments.

The lure of inner city apartment living comes with being within an easy walk or very short commute of all amenities, like shops, cafes and restaurants and of course the office.

More than 150 apartments are now sold every month in central Auckland. Tighter body corporate legislation giving owners greater control over how their apartments are manage, together with the cost of stand-alone homes in desirable inner city suburbs being beyond many buyers, are the biggest drivers of this growth in apartment development.

Mini Kitchens, which has its factory in Tauranga and showrooms in Auckland and Christchurch, has witnessed a significant increase in demand for their flat pack kitchens to be installed into apartments in Auckland. Their kitchens are manufactured by Mobilspazio in Italy and feature the typical Italian styling and flair along with superb functionality. Their range of kitchenettes have been identified as a perfect match for inner city Auckland apartments.
